Parent and Family Engagement
As the immediate past president of the California State PTA (2017-2019) overseeing nearly 3,500 schools and 750,000 members I had the honor of speaking on behalf of the families and children we serve throughout the State of CA. As the oldest and largest child advocacy association, California PTA was established to advocate on behalf of children. I have a deep understanding of the critical need to partner with our parents and families to have the best outcomes for our students. When parents are involved in decision making we know that students have better attendance and can support teaching and learning as true partners. With the new Local Control Accountability Plans (LCAP), authentic family engagement is part of the ten state priorities that local schools are held accountable for. Schools now need to engage families and have them be part of the process of deciding what the best programs are for the children in their schools.
During my tenure as State President of PTA, our association wrote and sponsored legislation that was signed by then Governor Jerry Brown. I know how to get things done. This legislation outlined what authentic family engagement is, and the language in this bill is now part of the education code, and is research-based to ensure that schools have a guide on what the definition is. We know that including our families as decision makers in what they want to see in their local schools is the key to success. With my knowledge and background, my goal is to continue to partner with our families to ensure that they are being included and welcomed in their schools.
And, as I said earlier, we have never had a more important time in modern history to actively support and engage our parents in distance learning and engagement in their children’s K-12 education.
